Bethel had Adrianna practice levitating items, starting with a rolled-up pair of threadbare socks that had been left for her, until she could confidently lift a massive double-edged sword from its holder on the wall.

They worked on small spells requiring a few spoken words that sounded like nonsense until beads of sweat wended down Adrianna’s back and through her hair and temple. Her stomach growled noisily for the hundredth time and her arms ached.

She had been able to stir the air in the room and light the candles that littered the walls between the plethora of sharp, glinting metal.

Surely a Shediem doesn’t need as many weapons as this, she thought with a scoff. He’s obviously compensating for something. She snickered at that, losing her concentration on the sofa that floated at least ten feet off the floor, and it fell with an echoing crash.

Bethel sucked in a sharp, fearful breath, and even Adrianna found herself frozen in place, the air caught in her lungs.

But when no one came, they both slowly relaxed. Adrianna focused on the table and the chair this time, willing them to rise. Her hands shook in front of her, but she didn’t stop. Even Bethel slouched against the massive sofa. It had been hours.

Both items groaned before lifting several inches off the floor.

“Good work, m’dear,” Bethel praised.

Adrianna set them down gently and wiped the sweat from her forehead, wondering how much longer they would be expected to keep at it without food. “What’s next?”
